Weekend Wind Down

Time flies when you’re having fun. It also flies when you are studying (and suddenly there’s never time to study enough!). I miss when weekends were more than just a prime time to get caught up on school work…I’m still working on finding that perfect balance between work and play…

Managed to drag myself out of bed earrrrly this morning to catch the last three sets of the epic men’s final at the Aussie Open — Dunlop was interested in the tennis ball, too!

Ottawa got all keyed up for the NHL All Star weekend in town. The ice sculptures for each team were lit up beautifully at night in Confederation Park.

My lovely friend Christelle hosted a fun afternoon of card making; now I'm looking forward to sending out some snail mail!

Hope the last weekend of January treated you well!

A Match Brewed in Dessert Heaven: Dark Chocolate Earl Grey Tart

I am a tea drinker. It fits all occasions. Early mornings, pity parties, long talks, steamy dates, nights of insomnia, last minute cramming, cozying up on the couch...through it all there has been one man: Earl Grey. Though I certainly appreciate variety in my tea cup, I think the Earl and I have a serious and lasting relationship. What better way to show my love for the Earl than to pair him with another one of my favourite things? Cue a decadent Dark Chocolate Earl Grey Tart.

This dessert even got the nod from my mother, and she’s my (most loving) harshest critic! Even if you’re not a big tea fan, the subtle-tea (I promise to stop…) of the bergamot flavoring adds a really lovely dimension to the dessert. As long as you like chocolate, you’re good to go. Something this decadent shouldn’t be so easy to make…

Confessions of an Ex-Shopaholic

I am a Magpie. I love sparkles, sequins, anything pretty and unique…I like to “guild the lily” as my mum would say.  Obviously, I am not the only girl with these fascinations but this is a fairly recent phase in my life. Growing up with three brothers, I thought of myself as tomboy-ish and I cringed at being called a “girly-girl”.  My childhood was filled with ballet classes, sports, Disney and Nerf guns…at the end of the day I would say it was well balanced.  And then suddenly when I was 17 (around the age I first had a job with real money and started going to school downtown) I became a bit of a shopaholic.  I looooved high heels (I still do. And I think it’s totally fine to wear them even if you’re tall.).  I fell hard for OPI nail polish.  I went from owning three dresses to more than my closet could handle.

I think even the Duchess has a bit of magpie in her...(picture from the Daily Mail)

Last summer I was travelling with my family in Europe and after dropping a fair amount of money in London, my Dad remarked that my spending was getting a little out of control.  He also pointed out that I could probably outfit a small country with all my clothes.  He was right (about the over-spending. I’m pretty sure I don’t have THAT many clothes.).  So then and there, outside of Top Shop in Oxford Circus, I proclaimed that I would not shop for one year. (I kept the purchases from that day though…) That was on Thursday July 21stIt has since been 26 weeks. I’m half way there!

To clarify, “not shopping” for me has just meant no objects (clothes, accessories, makeup, books, etc). I have however been purchasing toiletries (sorry, I like to stay clean!), I still bought gifts for others, and I’ve definitely spent money going out and about.  In the grand scheme of things, I realize this isn’t a huge deal, and I’m certainly not claiming to be making any kind of difference to society.  It has been a lot easier than I thought! My wallet is definitely healthier than it used to be, and I like to think that I’m becoming a smarter consumer. Being a student in environmental sciences, it is also hard NOT to think about the environmental implications of what you’re doing (i.e. what you’re buying) fairly often, so that’s another source of motivation for me — a teeny tiny way to help our planet.
So to mark six months of self-restraint I figured I should celebrate…by not shopping for another six! Happy Thursday!

The Ballerina of Desserts

Bursting with juicy fruit and cream between layers of brown sugar meringue, this delicate and versatile dessert is certainly fit for its namesake.  Believed to be created in honour of Russian prima ballerina Anna Pavlova while dancing on tour in Australia or New Zealand (they still debate it), the dessert has become one of my favourite things to make (and eat, obviously!).
This “triple-layer” version of the pavlova is a little more high maintenance than a more typical pavlova with one large meringue and toppings, but it is still easy to make and assemble and the overall effect of the layers is worth it! Recipe and variations

Red Lentil Soup for a Sunday Dinner

After making a sufficient mess in the kitchen this weekend, some lovely gals came over for Sunday dinner. I love playing hostess, and am super lucky to have friends who act as my cooking guinea pigs! The menu was a little bit haphazard, but the outcome was a warm, hearty and healthy meal with good friends, which is the most important part!

This red lentil soup is very simple to prepare, but with a drizzle of the spiced oil on top and garnished with a sprig of coriander, it will look like you slaved over the stove.
Serve up some soup! And see the rest of the random dinner menu…

Jazz and Tapas

The Bytowne Theatre lights up a cold night.

After hearing so much about the darling film of Cannes, The Artist, I finally saw it last week…twice. I enjoyed it so much that after seeing it with a couple of girlfriends I got my parents and grandmother out to the theatre as well. I may or may not have tap danced out the theatre (I totally did). What can I say, it’s a crowd pleaser!

The charming leads in the silent film "The Artist".

My parents took me out for post-movie drinks and a bite to eat (I love my parents!). So on that cold, snowy night we warmed up with some tapas at “Trio” a tiny, but great, place in Westboro. The food was inventive and delicious and there was good music to boot.

Truckin’ Locavore

I’m always kind of surprised at how fast the semester starts back up again. My best efforts to be “SUPER ORGANIZED” seem to fall by the wayside embarrassingly fast. With classes at 8:30am, labs at night and extra-curriculars on the side, there seems to be a lot of stuff to do before having fun in the kitchen. Bummer!

Veggie chili from Stone Soup Foodworks..delish!

Despite my disorganization, I really don’t like to buy food when I’m at school. Most of it is overpriced and under-delicious. But there are exceptions to every rule! Stone Soup Foodworks is AWESOME. They do “Slow Food. Fast.” and operate from a bright green truck (currently on campus at the University of Ottawa).  Their food is affordable, but I love it because it is just plain good all around.  They use ingredients from local and sustainable sources, the food is fresh and delicious, and they offer plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. Everything I’ve tried (vegan cookies, sweet potato coconut soup, borscht, chilli, beef tacos, sandwiches, the list goes on and on) has been fantastic.

So happy to receive my Stone Soup bowl on Christmas morning!

If you work, live or hangout anywhere near the University of Ottawa campus you should definitely try your next lunch here. It’s the healthiest, yummiest and best priced food around! Stone Soup is supposed to be at Winterlude on weekends this February, too, so if you visit Ottawa during the festival make sure you’re on the lookout for a happy green truck!

I Ate Quinoa Before It Was Cool

I had a lot of fun visiting friends in Toronto this past weekend – maybe too much fun right before getting back into the school grind…oops!

These cool people introduced me to what might be the tastiest burger ever. There’s a place in Toronto called The Burger’s Priest, where their mission is to “redeem the burger one at a time”. I was initially leaning towards a veggie burger, but then I saw the “Vatican City”; instead of a bun, the burger is between two grilled cheese sandwiches…I couldn’t resist! (Their whole “secret” menu can be found here. Soooo good. But, you can’t eat like that all the time…

So. After the first day back at school I had a craving for something cheesy, but didn’t feel like going into a large-burger-induced-food-coma afterward…cue cheesy quinoa cakes.

I ate quinoa before it was cool. I feel like the superfood (pronounce keen-wah) has enjoyed a surge of popularity within the past decade as more and more people realize how awesome and versatile it is, but my awesome mama has been serving it up in various ways for as long as I can remember. If you haven’t tried quinoa before, you really should. It boasts some crazy nutritional value and is a snap to make. If you have tried quinoa before, I’m glad! Either way, you should make these as soon as possible…

Spice Up Your Cake Life

Although ginger seems to be prominent in baking during the holidays, I really don’t think this should be a seasonal baking spice! These three cakes, Spiced Yogurt Pound Cake, Blueberry Ginger Pound Cake, and Gingerbread Cake with Maple Whipped Cream, all make use of ginger and other aromatic spices. I can assure you, they taste good all year long (because really, is yummy cake ever seasonal?!). These are some pretty easy, no-fuss recipes. It’s easy to dress these cakes up with glazes or creams, but they’re really lovely on their own. Happy Baking!
